The day I failed the music quiz (week 4 of Jerusalem term, I think it was) was both the worst day and the best day I'd had in a while. It was the worst day because music is my life so failing that quiz was horrible. But it was also one of the best days because that was the day that we started working on the piece written by Dr. Erb himself called Elect of God.
The reason this piece effected me so much is because of how beautiful it is. The lyrics especially. Every time we sing this, I get goosebumps on the back of my neck (Which, let me tell you, can be a bit distracting during choir, in case you've never experienced it yourself).
The song itself is a wonderful reminder of how we as Christians ought to behave. How to think, act, be. And what we are charged with. Thus, here are the words.
Elect of God
Arranged by Dr. David R. Erb
(Taken from Colossians 3:12-17)
Elect of God, holy and beloved
Put on tender mercies,
kindness, humility,
meekness, long suffering;
Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another,
if anyone has a complaint against another;
even as Christ forgave you,
so you also must do.
But above all these things put on love
Which is the bond of perfection, put on love.
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts,
To which also you were called to one body;
And be thankful.
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.
Teaching and admonishing one another
In psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
And whatever you do in word or deed,
Do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus,
Giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Amen.
