Blue October

I've decided that Blue October is one of the greatest bands out there. Not only do they have a great beat and a very fun feel to all of their songs, but their lyrics are FANTASTIC!

The first song of theirs that I heard was Into The Ocean. I liked it because it told a sort of story. He fell overboard and was floating in the dark ocean, completely afraid. Here's a bit of it:

-Into The Ocean-

Where is the coastguard
I keep looking each direction
For a spotlight, give me something
I need something for protection
Maybe flotsam junk will do just fine
the jetsam sunk, I'm left behind
I'm treading for my life believe me
(How can I keep up this breathing?)

Not knowing how to think
I scream aloud, begin to sink
My legs and arms are broken down
With envy for the solid ground
I'm reaching for the life within me
How can one man stop his ending
I thought of just your face
Relaxed, and floated into space

I thought Into The Ocean was great, but then I heard Fairy Tale. Fairy Tale is pretty much a song for the boys. He starts out saying how his girlfriend wrote him a short list of things that a gentleman should do. The chorus is those four things. The song, then, is him passing on the gentleman's list to every other guy.

-Fairy Tale-

I haven't been quite the same,
So sure the story of my life would never change.
But in a bright-eyed way, she rinsed out the soap in my eyes,
And wrote a song that I'm about to sing.

She's a magnetic girl
That I hardly even know.
So this is not another love song.
Just a list of things that I should know,
And everyone should know that:

1. You got to take it kind of slowly
2. You got to hurry up and make your move
3. You got to tell her how you're feeling
4. You got to be the perfect gentleman.

When you shake the walls, you got to make 'em bend, yeah.
You got to show her that
She's the balance beam
And I keep falling all around her fairy tale.

We took a walk in the rain.
I suggested, she confess:
"There's a heart nearby to cast the shame."

Stay cool.
But I'm giddy like a school boy.
You got to handle with care:
This is not a toy.

Then gradually we touched.
And though our clothes were wet, we sat and smiled.
I never thought I'd smile so much
The first kiss always says the most.

1. You got to take it kind of slowly
2. You got to hurry up and make your move
3. You got to tell her how you're feeling
4. You got to be the perfect gentleman.

When you shake the walls, you got to make 'em bend, yeah.
You got to show her that
She's the balance beam
And I keep falling all around her fairy tale.(fairy tale...)

And then, just when I thought that they couldn't come out with a song better than Fairy Tale, I heard Calling You.

Oh my gosh, what is with this band?! Why is it that they can express everything so wonderfully in such a simple way?! Calling You is now one of my very favorite songs ever.

-Calling You-

There's something that I can't quite explain
I'm so in love with you
you'll never take that away

And if I said a hundred times before
expect a thousand more
you never take that away

well expect me to becalling you to see if you're ok when I'm not around,
asking if you love me I love the way you make it sound.
calling you to see do I try too hard to make you smile?
to make a smile

well I will keep calling you to see
if you're sleeping are you dreaming and
if you're dreaming are you dreaming of me?
I cant believe you actually picked...me

I thought that the world had lost its sway
(its so hard sometimes)
then I fell in love with you
(then came you)
and you took that away
(its not so difficult, the world is not so difficult)
you take away the old
show me the new
and I feel like I can fly
when I stand next to you
so what if I'm on this phone
a hundred miles from home
I take the words you gave
and send them back to you

I only want to see if you're ok when I'm not around
asking if you love me, I love the way you make it sound.
calling you to see do I try too hard to make you smile?
to make a smile

I will keep calling you to see
if you're sleeping are you dreaming and
if you're dreaming are you dreaming of me
I cant believe you actually picked...me

well I will keep calling you to see
if you're sleeping are you dreaming and
if you're dreaming are you dreaming of me
I cant believe you actually picked...me

I will keep calling you to see
if you're sleeping are you dreaming and
if you're dreaming are you dreaming of me
I cant believe you actually picked...me

Oh, yes, Calling You is a great song. Blue October is a great band in that their lyrics can be incredibly sweet, but the singer isn't wimpy at all. He's got that totally strong sound to his voice. That is what makes them so great. They're sweet, yet manly. It's not every day that you come across a band like that.
