In Great Books class we have been reading about the saints. One of the saints we read about was St. Agnes, the patron saint of virgins. Sunday is St. Agnes' feast day. In the Medival Ages, young girls were perform a sort of ceremony on the eve of St. Agnes' day(this Saturday night), and, supposedely, St. Agnes would give them a vision of their future husband.
When my class learned about this us girls became intreiged and excited. The guys, though, we silent throughout most of it. Us girl, however, decided to try it, just for fun. And don't get the wrong idea about it; none of us actually think we'll see anything. We're doing it just to see what it would have been like for the girls in the Medival Ages. To understand what they would have felt like on that night. And because it'd be fun.
Some of the things that girls in that age did on St. Agnes' Eve(and what we're going to do) are things like not eating supper, or fasting for the whole day; walking backwards to her bed; wearing a clean white gown to bed; not sleeping in bed, but on the top of the covers with her hands behind her head. There are other things that some girls did that my classmates and I aren't going to do. Things like eating an yokeless hard boiled egg, with salt in the place of the yoke(supposedely the man in the vision will come to give the girl water to quench her thirst from all the salt she ate), or placing a sprig of rosemary and tyme in a shoe on each side of the girl's bed.
John Keates wrote a poem about St. Agnes' Eve. It's a sort of Romeo and Juliet story, where the boy and girl are in love with each other, but their families are enemys. On St. Agnes' Eve, the boy hides in the girl's room and she sees him, thinking he's the vision, so she thinks that he's the one that she will marry. You can guess the rest, I'm sure. :-)
So, my friends and I have been getting excited, wondering what will happen. I don't think anything will happen, but it'd be cool if it did.
God bless!
